To: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell

Fix the Senate -- Reform the Filibuster

Fix the Senate -- Reform the Filibuster

End the Obstruction and Fix the Senate Now!

The abuse of the filibuster to undermine policies that the minority cannot defeat through the normal legislative process is harming our democratic institutions and must not continue.

We call on you, and all the members of the Senate, to restore fairness and honor to the nomination and confirmation process for executive and judicial nominations, and use the rules of the Senate in a constructive way that fulfills both your constitutional responsibilities and the needs of the American people in these challenging times. Or to reform those rules if a determined minority remains adamant in maintaining a veto over everything that conflicts with their radical philosophy.

Why is this important?

The Senate is broken.

It's that simple. Because Republicans continue to insist upon misusing the right to filibuster, corrupting the process and requiring 60 votes to pass almost every bill, the Senate’s work for the American people has ground to a halt.

Issues like guns, immigration, climate change, every one of them blocked by filibusters. But it's not just issues, the filibuster created the judicial crisis of unfilled vacancies in our courts. Unenforceable labor law. A toothless Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Leadership vacancies at the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Interior.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

The compromise on rules reform that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell agreed to at the start of this Congress is not working. We still do not have a functioning Senate that passes legislation and confirms nominations in a timely manner.

Demand that Senators Reid and McConnell stop the obstruction and fix the senate right now.

Reasons for signing

  • The time has come for Senator Reid to change the rules regarding the filibuster which the Republicans use to block the Democrats Majority. However Sen. Reid has the right and responsibility to prevent the filibuster by simply changing the rules of the Senate. I sincerely hope he is able to change his decision regarding the rules of the Senate even though this session has begun. He is the majority leader and he must set the rules in the Senate. Elliot Nirenberg
  • Congress has to do something to represent us and not bigots and big business
  • Humans only hurt themselves when we let Congress sleep on the issues that millions of citizens face today and will face for many years to come.
