Pass the Voter Empowerment Act (Bill A5972-2015 in the Assembly, sponsored by Rep. Brian Kavanagh, and Bill S2538-2015, in the Senate sponsored by Sen. Michael Gianaris)
Why is this important?
The Voter Empowerment Act will require the Board of Elections to automatically register all eligible citizens in New York state to vote. Citizens would no longer need to register to vote, and would be able to opt-out online if they don't want to be registered. In addition, this would also require online voter registration tools to be provided, so citizens may update their addresses and find new voting locations quickly. The bill would also require the pre-registration of 16 and 17 year olds so that they may easily be added as active voters when they turn 18.
