Yassamin is an Arizona native, the daughter of immigrants, and a young community leader with a deep-rooted commitment to public service. She first ventured into politics as a field organizer for the Arizona Democratic Party in 2008 to help elect Barack Obama. She is the product of public schools and later went on to graduate from Stanford and Cambridge universities. Yassamin has spent her career working on issues such as climate change, refugee and migration, gender equality, and social justice.

Last year, Yassamin served as the youngest advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, where she led the youth engagement and public mobilization efforts for the UN Climate Action Summit. In this capacity, she brought together more than 1,000 young climate leaders from 140+ countries for the first-ever UN Youth Climate Summit. Previously, she worked with the Office of Governor Jerry Brown where she served as the Deputy Director of Policy for the Global Climate Action Summit— a historic event that delivered more than 500 new commitments from business, cities, states, and regions to tackle climate change. For her work in public service, Yassamin was recognized by Forbes as “30 Under 30” in the Law & Policy category, and as a Grist 50 “Fixer”— the people cooking up the boldest, most innovative solutions to fix the biggest challenges that face our globe. Yassamin is ready to use her experience as a globally recognized young advocate to reform and bring about positive change in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona.

Yassamin is running for Phoenix City Council, District 7 because her district needs a representative who can take on the powerful and win. The residents of City Council District 7 are honest, hard-working people who only need a level playing field to succeed. But Yassamin’s district is not receiving equal treatment. The district has a lot of things the residents don’t want, and not enough of the things they need. Yassamin fundamentally believes that we need more young people, especially from diverse backgrounds, in elected office at all levels. She is also running because we need local leaders who understand the urgency of the climate crisis and are willing to take bold action. Yassamin has dedicated her life’s work to combat the global climate emergency, but what she has realized through her work is that unless we have champions at every level of government, none of the ambitious international targets we set will matter.

Phoenix is the fifth-largest city in the United States and a place where Yassamin knows she can make an important impact on the climate crisis. Phoenix is experiencing some of the worst air pollution in the country, deadly heatwaves, dangerous wildfires, and drought. By breathing dirty air, the lives of millions of Phoenix-area residents are at risk. Given her years of work with cities across the world, Yassamin knows there are solutions that we can and should be implementing. With just eight members of the Phoenix City Council, the opportunity to make a difference is huge.
